Press Release

9-0 Ithaca to meet 9-0 Cortland in 63rd Cortaca Jug

Upstate New York Game of the Century II To be played at Yankee Stadium

New York (November 5, 2022)

Not since the original “Upstate NY Game of the Century” in 1988 when 8-0 Ithaca College traveled to 8-0 Cortland, have both teams been undefeated when they have met in their annual Cortaca Jug contest. In that game, Cortland upset highly ranked Ithaca 21-20 in front of a raucous standing room only crowd at Carl “Chugger” Davis Field in monsoon like conditions.

That’s exactly what is going to happen when 9-0 Ithaca and 9-0 Cortland meet next Saturday, November 12th when the “Upstate New York Game of the Century II” is played at Yankee Stadium with a 12:05pm kickoff scheduled. This year’s game, the 63rd edition of the Cortaca Jug football game will be televised by the YES Network with IC Alumnus and NBC 4 New York City Sports Anchor Bruce Beck ’78 handling the play by play duties.

The Ithaca Bombers clinched their first Liberty League Championship outright on Saturday with a convincing 31-28 win over Union College, with this, Ithaca earned an automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Division III playoffs scheduled to begin the weekend after their rivalry game with Cortland.

The Cortland Red Dragons clinched their second straight Empire 8 Conference Championship outright on Saturday with a convincing 56-14 win against conference foe St. John Fisher. The Red Dragons have been virtually untested this season averaging 525 yds and 49 points a game on offense while only giving up 14 points a game on defense. Cortland is ranked #11 nationally by D3 Football.com while Ithaca is close behind at #12.
